Can I smelt a gold necklace into a ring for free?
I have an halve ounce gold neckalce, and I am currently BROKE, so is it possible for me to smelt it down somehow and make a ring out of it? If its possible, about how much would that cost me, Because the best thing at this point for me is free…. If the ring only needs halve of the halve ounce, they can keep the rest of the gold, I just want the ring. So I can go ahead and propose.
!00% serious answer: It’s done all the time by jewelers and goldsmiths, through a process called “lost wax casting.” If you have a jewelers furnace for melting and annealing, a wax mock-up of your ring design, and plaster to pour over the wax to turn the wax into a mold, melt the gold in the furnace, pour it into the plaster, the wax will incinerate, you let the gold cool and harden, remove the plaster and you can use a dremel tool with a polishing wheel to buff the gold. Voila! A ring from a old necklace.
While the gold is free, the rest of the equipment can be expensive to buy. The gold requires a high temperature to melt, not as hot as many other metals, but hotter than you can get through any household oven or stove. It’s also a hazardous procedure due to the high heat of the casting furnace, you need special electricity sources to use some of these furnaces, kiln and smelters and they can cause serious injuries if you don’t know how to properly operate them.
You can contact a goldsmith and see if they can help, see if you can sell some of the gold and use some for a simple band style ring. Or you can find an art college that gives goldsmith lessons, you can learn how to use your old gold to make something new, and perhaps learn a skill that you can turn into a job or a career.
So it can be done, but it’s not cheap, nor is it easy.
